Define your priorities in life before you define your space. Assess your home and reduce unnecessary possessions. In other words, be a minimalist. As they say - a cluttered space is a cluttered mind. Prioritise your belongings by their function, purpose, and most importantly how they contribute to enriching your life.
This is a work in process for myself and I envy those who are naturally built this way. Hoarding is a genetic disposition* in my family and I am constantly fighting it. Once I counted 14 chairs in my small 2-bedroom apartment. A lot of them were ‘strays’ I rescued and repaired. When it dawned on me I was becoming the cat-lady of inanimate objects I realised it was time to reduce my crap.
Currently I am on an Interior Diet in a long-term effort to minimise my belongings to essentials. Down the track I’ll write how to approach this because there is a difference between throwing things out and mindfully creating change.
