This project involved a modest renovation of a private apartment in the Clarion Suites Gateway. Boasting epic views of the Yarra river and surrounding cityscape the space is showered with light during the day but by night becomes the viewing deck to one of the best panoramas of Melbourne.
Apart from stunning travertine floors the apartment’s fit out was outdated and inefficient. The clients wanted to remodel the kitchen and bathroom, and followed through with the suggestion to turn a clunky wardrobe and cavity space into a built in entertainment unit to define the living space.
A contrasting palette of charcoals, iron grey with white and chrome were incorporated to build a sense of depth and elegance to match the atmosphere of the city at night. The kitchen internal bulkhead was painted black to emphasise it’s ‘cut-out’ quality and give stronger sense of proportion to the open-plan space.
In the bathroom, the bath was removed and replaced with a walk in shower with built in seat. The existing marble vanity was incorporated into the scheme of neutral whites, bluestone like floor tile. Champagne gold mosaics lined the inner walls of the cavity framing the mirror cabinet.
Nicknamed the ‘NYC 3000’ for its Manhattan appeal and Melbourne postcode, Latrobe St apartment is a bite of big apple in the little smoke.

The design is actually very simple. Focusing mainly on utilising found materials (palette crates, milk crates, tins), economical or recycled materials (pegboard, plywood, offcuts) and donated second-hand furniture. Colour is then used to unify the space with monochromes, a lot of unapologetic yellow, and a few key pops of colour.
